Django 1.0
September 14th, 2008

Django, my web framework of choice, finally reached 1.0 status earlier this month (although it’s been running enterprise websites for several years). Mostly it means forward-compatibility with subsequent 1.x releases. So, today I buckled down and installed 1.0 on my Dreamhost server. It went pretty smoothly except for a few issues with the new comments system, but it only took about 2 hours to rewrite the apps for my two sites (one being my father’s watercolor gallery) and get them running with the help of the 1.0 Porting Guide provided on the official Django website.
Check out the new comment system. Now your name can have a URL attached that links to your personal website or blog and leave an email address (I won’t give it to anyone, I promise) so that I can respond to comments that warrant a response.
Next up is porting over jennipotts.com so that subsequent Clickpop sites are all running the same version.

The Ghost and the Grace
July 14th, 2008

I’ve been doing web design for my friend Daniel Anderson for a while now. Daniel is half of the duo Idiot Pilot , and with his help I was lucky enough to be able to design their website. His newest project, The Ghost and the Grace , is quite a departure from Idiot Pilot, but nonetheless reflects Daniel’s intense knowledge of music.
I designed the site pictured above and the album art for his 4 upcoming EPs below. There’s a mash-up that Dan recently posted on his excellent blog at the very bottom.

Almost forgot. Dan and my friend David Drori and I also made a promotional video for The Ghost and the Grace. Here it is:

jennipotts.com
June 30th, 2008

For the last few months I’ve been working for a small record label here in Bellingham called Clickpop Records . My most recent project, a website for singer/songwriter Jenni Potts , was completed about a month ago. Jenni is an excellent musician and a very enjoyable person. Check out the site and make sure to listen to the track posted below.
For all you web designers out there the site was built with a custom Django back-end and some neat features like flickr and google maps integration. I’ll be posting more about Django and how I work in some upcoming posts.

sIFR for Scott Hansen
June 25th, 2008

Recently I’ve been helping out Scott Hansen (of ISO50 and Tycho fame) with his website. First on the list was upgrading to sIFR 3 to remedy a problem where his post titles weren’t clickable. We got that fixed and Scott was nice enough to write a post about my help. Thanks Scott!
That post lead to the highest volume of traffic I’ve ever had on Sidearm and got me thinking that it was time to abandon the pretty basic portfolio I had here for a more suitable blog format. Over the next few days I’ll be adding a lot of content to the website so stay tuned.
P.S. The photo is of Scott’s poster The Workers Party .
